Membership
of the Society of Editors (NSW) is open to anyone working as an editor
in print media or electronic publishing, either full-time or part-time,
and to anyone who supports the society’s aims.
New members can join as professional or as associate members.
Professional members must
have been engaged professionally in editing for publication for at least two years full time or
equivalent in the opinion of the committee. Applications must be supported by confirmation of
editing experience acceptable to the committee from a third party. Professional editor members
have the right to vote or take office in the society and the right to advertise in the Editorial
Services Directory.
Anyone can be an associate member and receive the benefits of
membership, but associates cannot advertise in the Editorial Services Directory.
Why
join?
* Develop your skills and expand your knowledge
Our meetings, workshops and seminars are preferentially priced for members.
Past workshops and seminars have been on grammar, indexing, structural
and copy editing, editing onscreen as well as setting up your own freelance
business.
*
Stay
abreast of developments in your profession
Come to our monthly meetings and/or read our
newsletter, Blue Pencil. Guest speakers
at meetings come from all areas of publishing. Blue Pencil often features transcripts of addresses by guest speakers,
and includes tips on grammar, reviews of relevant publications, details
of available training and contact details for associated professional
organisations.
*
Promote yourself
Professional members have the opportunity to list their freelance business in the Society’s Editorial Services Directory,
which is available online as well as in print.
The directory is promoted to potential clients, including book publishers and the corporate and
public sectors. The society also sends email alerts to members notifying them of job opportunities and contract positions.
*
Develop your networks
Share contacts and networks and meet others with like interests. Recommend
and be recommended in turn.
*
Help advance the profession
Help boost the status of editing as a profession by contributing directly and through your
membership of the society, to the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd), the umbrella organisation for the state societies.
