Experience: After completing postgraduate studies in environmental science at the University of Canberra I was employed by Environment Australia to re-edit sections of the Fauna of Australia to make it more accessible to the lay reader. During the same period I was employed as a senior tutor by the University of Canbera to teach scientific writing. At the expiry of my contract with Environment Australia I found freelance work editing and writing for the National Trust of Australia (ACT), producing their magazine Heritage in Trust.

I have extensive experience with editing publications for government departments and agencies and have produced brochures, and edited manuscripts, theses, technical publications and conference proceedings. South Australia’s Environmental Protection Authority was a major client for several years, during which time I edited, wrote and designed a large number of publications.

Until the end of 2009 I worked as a staff editor for the Hawke Research Institute of the University of South Australia where I edited academic papers and books on sociology, history and philosophy. In addition I designed and typeset several books for the University.

More recently I have edited, designed and typset a substantial book on the history of the South Australian Housing Trust, and a book on the history of inland Australia, and edited a number of management-related academic papers foe Flinders University.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Applied Science (Canberra)
Master of Applied Science (Canberra)
Certificate III in Business Administration
Certificate IV Trainer and Assessor

Computer capability: I have high-level skills with many computer software packages, including MS Office and Adobe Creative Suite and FrameMaker, and am an experienced typesetter and digital image manipulator. I am more familiar with Macs, but can work with a PC.

Services offered: Copyediting, structural editing, proofreading, publication design and desktop publishing, typesetting, indexing, photography, picture research, Plain English rewriting, technical writing and editing.

Type of material: Books, academic papers, web pages, reports, theses.

Subject specialities: Agriculture, horticulture, environmental sciences, sociology, history, architecture, management.

Special skills/interests: I particularly enjoy making specialist writing accessible to the lay reader. I believe that it is important to get one’s message to as many people as possible. Book editing and design are another favourite – I find it very fulfilling to guide an author from initial manuscript right through to final product.
